Trump: “The Power Is Trade”

Check out this fantastically uniformed discussion on the national debt between Trump and The Washington Post. This is from the same conversation in which he claimed that we’re headed for a “very massive recession” that only President Trump could avoid:

DT: We’ve got to get rid of the $19 trillion in debt.

BW: How long would that take?

DT: I think I could do it fairly quickly, because of the fact the numbers….

BW: What’s fairly quickly?

DT: Well, I would say over a period of eight years. And I’ll tell you why.

BW: Would you ever be open to tax increases as part of that, to solve the problem?

DT: I don’t think I’ll need to. The power is trade. Our deals are so bad.

This isn’t a “I’m negotiating in public, making bold opening moves to get the best deal possible” series of statements. This is genuine ignorance. We will pay off the national debt in eight years by renegotiating our trade deals? That is, as Kevin Drum says, “ignorance and incoherence was on a Charlie Sheen-esque level—except that Trump didn’t have any pharmaceutical help.” And lest you think that he and I have pulled out the part of the interview most unflattering for Trump, go ahead and randomly scroll to any part of the transcript and see for yourself. This man is a truly clueless man who is unalterably convinced of his own brilliance.
